Amplifying My Kindle With a FM Transmitter

So, I own a kindle and one of my favorite features on my kindle is that it will read to you the books you have. However, I think when Amazon was creating the kindle they felt when people read out loud that they whispered, because that is exactly how the kindle reads. I am sure that it is also not easy to put powerful speakers in a small device, but it is still really annoying.

I had to go on a long drive and I wanted to listen to my kindle. Normally, I have headphones to magnify my whispering kindle, but my wife hates it when I wear them and drove. So, I stopped into my local Radio Shack to see what solutions they offered.

It has been a while since I’ve needed a converter. The last time I bought one was in the 90’s and it was an old tape cassette that I would put into the tape deck in the car to play the new invention of the CD. I have yet to convert from CDs to MP3s, so I haven’t had a need really.

I was surprised that Radio Shack still offered the tape converter. I drive a 2000 Toyota, so I do have a tape cassette in my car. However, I couldn’t bring myself to buy this antique. I felt like I would be going back a couple decades in technology (and in truth I was).

Instead I settled upon FM Transmitter for $39.99 plus tax. The basic idea of this converter was to use my FM radio to transmit my reading kindle. Very cool idea, not a great solution, though.

Don’t get me wrong it works, but you are always fighting with the radio stations to keep your signal. There is also a fair amount of static as well when I use this solution.

I guess in the end, a tape converter has proven itself over the years, and I should of gone with the proven technology.
