Amplifying My Kindle With a FM Transmitter

So, I own a kindle and one of my favorite features on my kindle is that it will read to you the books you have. However, I think when Amazon was creating the kindle they felt when people read out loud that they whispered, because that is exactly how the kindle reads. I am sure that it is also not easy to put powerful speakers in a small device, but it is still really annoying.

I had to go on a long drive and I wanted to listen to my kindle. Normally, I have headphones to magnify my whispering kindle, but my wife hates it when I wear them and drove. So, I stopped into my local Radio Shack to see what solutions they offered.

It has been a while since I’ve needed a converter. The last time I bought one was in the 90’s and it was an old tape cassette that I would put into the tape deck in the car to play the new invention of the CD. I have yet to convert from CDs to MP3s, so I haven’t had a need really.

I was surprised that Radio Shack still offered the tape converter. I drive a 2000 Toyota, so I do have a tape cassette in my car. However, I couldn’t bring myself to buy this antique. I felt like I would be going back a couple decades in technology (and in truth I was).

Instead I settled upon FM Transmitter for $39.99 plus tax. The basic idea of this converter was to use my FM radio to transmit my reading kindle. Very cool idea, not a great solution, though.

Don’t get me wrong it works, but you are always fighting with the radio stations to keep your signal. There is also a fair amount of static as well when I use this solution.

I guess in the end, a tape converter has proven itself over the years, and I should of gone with the proven technology.

2010—Why We Call Our Blog Piggers (Grocery Review)

If there is anything that best represents our piggish nature it is our grocery buying. We went to the grocery store 255 times last year and spent a shameful total of $18,583.80. That is how much some families make in an entire year! As stated in other reviews it is an embarrassing task to go through your annual spending habits. However, it does help Lacy and I to create some hard fast new  year resolutions to be more conscience of our spending habits.

As with all my reviews, there are some awards to be handed out in the grocery category. First goes to the most visited grocery store, which is Giant Eagle (99 times). If you are outside of Pennsylvania than Giant Eagle may not be familiar to you. It is the largest grocery chain here, and because of this the most convenient. In 2010 we lived in two houses. The closest grocery store to our first house was a Giant Eagle and they definitely benefited from it ($3,062.80).

Interesting enough, the award for most money spent doesn’t go to a place that  we went almost a hundred times to. No, the infamous Walmart, which we 27 times less (72 visits), but spent over 3x more at a whopping $9,247. That is only $44.18 from being half of what we spent for our total annual grocery bill.

Shockingly Walmart is actually not close at all to either of the two homes we lived in last year. On both accounts Walmart was a solid 20 minutes away. However, Lacy swears by the prices of Walmart and is willing to spend the gasoline to get them (not sure if we make out better when you calculate the outrageous gas prices).

I think this review shows just how much we consume here in America, or maybe it is just my family. Yet, I have a sneaky feeling that this is not the case.

CompanyTimes VisitedTotal Amount SpentRecommendationReview
Aldis1$7.36Lacy LikesWe were introduced to Aldis by a friend and we liked the prices. However, it isn't really close to us. Futhermore, I could see us always forgetting to bring our own bags, because the store doesn't provide any.
Costco28$4,292.57Lacy & Ryan LikeLacy is a big fan of Costco and would live here if she could. Ryan is just a big fan of their free food Ü.
CVS19.78Lacy LikesThere are not a lot of CVS in the west, so when we came to Pittsburgh we didn't know about the store. However, after having our doctor's office recommend that we buy our prescriptions there we have found it is a great little store (very similar to Rite Aid). A little pricey, but very convenient.
Dollar Tree9$97.33Ryan LikesIn college Ryan lived off of the Dollar store. Now he bases where we will live on whether a Dollar store is at least 5 minutes away (note: you can buy 1 gallon bags at the dollar store, which normally cost $4 at a regular store, FYI).
Giant Eagle99$3062.8Lacy & Ryan Tolerate Giant Eagle is the largest grocery chain in Pennsylvania. It is overpriced, but usually the closest grocery store (as you can see that we visited it 99 times this year). Their produce is far superior to Walmart's but still overpriced. This store is a necessary evil for our family.
Harmons1$84.22Lacy & Ryan Tolerate On our Utah trip we went to Harmons to try to save money by not eating out. However, Harmons is like most grocery stores that are not Walmart -- overpriced.
Kuhns25$738.74Lacy & Ryan Tolerate When we moved to our new house in Pittsburgh Kuhn's was the closest grocery store, but way overpriced (even by Giant Eagle's standards).
Magee Garden1$2.13Lacy & Ryan LikeWhen our little girl was born we decided that we needed a little break from the hospital food and splurged at Magee Garden, which is a convenient store in the hospital. It was surprisingly not that expensive, and the hospital did a great job making you feel like you weren't in a hospital.
Rite Aid6$117.23Ryan LikesRite Aid is with walking distance from Ryan's office, which means that is where he usually finds the snacks for his office. If you have ever been to Rite Aid you know that you can find very unusual and fun things there, but you also know you are going to pay more than if you found them in another store.
Safeway1$20.89Lacy & Ryan Tolerate On our trip to Montana we stopped in the local grocery store, which happened to Safeway. When you are pampered by Walmart's cheap prices it is hard to swallow the prices of the other groceries. Safeway has done a great job making their stores feel like you are a small town bakery/grocerier as do their prices.
Sam's Club1$38.27Ryan & Lacy Don't LikeLacy asked all her facebook friends about Sam's, and everyone said Sam's is overpriced. We bought a chair there with our parent's membership, and when we got the chair home it was broken. Ryan kept the receipt to return it, but it has been 8 months and he still hasn't done it. Regardless, we weren't impressed with Sam's.
Smiths1$25.75Lacy & Ryan Tolerate Smith's is a Kroger brand grocery store, that we went to on our second trip to Utah. If you read our other reviews on grocery stores (with the exception of Walmart) you will see that we feel they are overpriced. Smith's was no different, but we did enjoy their bakery.
Trader Joe's1$6.49Ryan LikesRyan had to buy olive oil and Trader Joe's was the closest store. He liked how niche the store was, and that there were a lot of products that he couldn't find in regular grocery stores. Our friends the Matthews are always ranting and raving about Trader Joe's. It is definitely a store we will have to explore more.
Walgreens3$83.89Lacy LikesLike CVS Lacy likes to use Walgreens for prescriptions. Other than that she wouldn't buy groceries due to the high prices.
Walmart72$9247.72Ryan & Lacy LikeIn Lacy's opinion the cheapest way to shop.
Shop N Save5$748.63Ryan LikesDecent store, but not as cheap as Walmart

My Digital Business Life

I’ve often wondered what it would be like growing up before computers. For me, it would have been quite boring. The digital age has been a great experience for me in expressing my creative binary side.

I am one of those web geeks who loves to create and build anything possible. What is interesting though is that I am not a web developer or designer. Instead, I am a web manager. I have worked with developers and designers all over the world to build many, many websites.

I can talk code geek, and even dabble with it a little, but anything in depth and I’m lost. In college I took several programming classes, and barely passed. What I gained from those courses though, was an understanding how everything came together, and I am able to articulate that to those whom I work with.

So, below is my 2010 expense table for my web projects. Many of them (okay, all of them) didn’t make much money. However, it was a good exercise on exactly how much I spend on the web (almost $6,500 ouch!). Hopefully, 2011 will be a lot more kind to my wallet!

CompanyReviewTotal Amount Spent
GoDaddy.comOh Godaddy, how I love to hate you. Not only do you like to inch your domain prices up all the time on me, but you also like to sell me everything including your grandmother. If it wasn't for your amazing customer service Moniker would be my main registrar! $405.72
eLance.comOccasionally I teach a community class on building your web business. I tell all my students they need to utilize elance for programming. It isn't the best place to find a designer, but when you need some good cheap code this is a great place. $250
BrainwareThis is my best kept secret when building a website. Brainware is a web development company out of India who is talented and amazingly inexpensive. They can design and program a wordpress site for $140--not too bad. Their low prices are what makes it possible for me to create websites for family and friends without going broke.$723
MilvenMilven is another great secret of mine. He is a digital artist out of the Philippines. He created the banner for piggers.com ($25). He has drawn cartoon and mascots for me as low as $35, and he is far better (and less costly) than any American logo company I have worked with. Don't bother asking me how to contact him. There is noooooooo way I am sharing this guy! He is all mine bwahahaha!!!!$427
RahulRahul is a logo artist out of India (though, he will tell you Singapore, since he thinks people are biased to India). Rahul does decent logos but he doesn't take direction very well. If you don't like his first attempt he will argue about why you should like it. However, he is skilled so sometimes it doesn't matter. He also does a great job touching up photos (and yes you are welcome to request his info).$61
Instinct EntertainmentThere is no way I can endorse any product developed by Instinct Entertainment. They are the creator of a widely popular wordpress ecommerce plugin called WP e-Commerce. However, it is HORRIBLE!!!! Don't every update the plugin because it will ALWAYS mess up your web store. I have found that if you want to go with a shopping cart that you best try a different CMS than wordpress, because unfortunately WP e-Commerce is really the only big contender out there!$40
VerioYears ago while living in Boca Raton, Florida I worked at Verio as a server technician. Unfortunately, they gave us discounts on domains and I literally bought hundreds of them. I have since either let them lapse or moved them to GoDaddy. I still have a few remaining and some day I will them all over to GoDaddy. Personally, I don't care for Verio as a domain registrar. They have not changed anything since I worked there in the early 2000's. Come on guys, it has been 10 years and you might want to check out Java Script. $26.85
VerangoVerango used to be my dad's ecommerce solution. They were okay, but we didn't like paying the monthly fee. When I created my dad a wordpress shopping cart they downloaded all the contacts in the cart for a fee. I appreciated it, since most companies would have made me jump through the hoops to get the information since I wasn't using their product anymore. After the nightmare building a ecommerce wordpress site I would change back to veracart if they didn't have a monthly fee. I just want to pay once and forget about my shopping cart!$20
Paul AdiyantoOne thing I love to add into all my designs is a mascot (as you can see from the pig in piggers). I do crowd sourcing for my design and I always give runner-up prizes to the designers who created a great design but didn't win the contest. Paul is logo artist and was a runner-up for one of my projects. I liked his work, but the winner of the contest created exactly what I was looking for (you can contact Paul for design at coroflot.com/paulwaterfall)$10
UshamahLike Paul Adiyanto, Ushamah was another runner-up to my design contest. If anyone is a runner-up in my contest than their work was really good, but the winner was better suited for what I was looking for. Ushamah was no different than from the rest.$10.05
Text BrokerAh, Text Broker, how you make my life easier and complicated all at the same time. Text Broker is a great website to find people to write for your blogs. Obviously, you pay the writer, but it all goes through Text Broker. It would be so much easier to break free from the TB system and just pay the writer, but obviously TB wouldn't make their money. So, when ever I need an authoritative article written I go to TB. Their writers can be good (and I usually request the same writer anyway), but keep in mind if you go cheap you are most likely going to get a cheap writer.$94.85
Shandie KusumaOkay, I absolutely LOVE Shandie's work. Shandie is a graphic artist who has some mad skills in drawing. I paid him to create avatars for everyone involved in my master's thesis as a thank you for their help. He charged $50 a person and there were 13 people involved. The quality of work was worth much more, he truly is an amazing artist.$651.75
Worldcitiesdatabase.comFor my masters I need to create a web app that allowed the user to not only put in their city and country, but also their longitude and latitude. I hunted for a free database but in the end went with WorldCitiesDatabase.com. Their database did the trick and my professor loved the web app. $79
RamakrishnaRam is another runner-up in my crowd sourcing design contest. I enjoy his work immensely and have awarded him as a winner in past design contests. $10
Winks DesignOkay, with hesitation Winks Design is the best design firm out there. Seriously, I have worked with web design companies all over the world and Winks Design beats them hands down. The only downside is that they are an American firm, which means American prices. However, sometimes you just have to pony up and pay what is needed to get the job done. I contracted Winks Design to polish up my final project with masters. Both my professor and I were quite impressed with their final product!$3000
Moniker Out of all the domain registrars I prefer Moniker. Their prices are one of the best on the web. However, their web interface is confusing and their customer service is horrible. IF you can find their customer service email don't plan on hearing back from them for a while. Unfortunately, for this reason I almost always buy my domains from GoDaddy.$16.68
MilanIf there is anyone who is my go to sort of guy for coding it is Milan. I have worked with Milan over the many years and I consider him a great friend. He lives in India and I have never met him, but if I need a quick php fix he is the best guy for the job!$164
Sonic Boom LabsI am a bit biased here, but the owner of SBL's is a good friend of mine. He is a whiz kid with Internet marketing and I love having his company handle all the dirty work for SEO. I honestly can say he is amazing at his work, and one of the last few marketers who just does the work without the hype!$134
iStockI seriously hate iStock. Not only are they extremely overpriced I feel their scheme of only giving you a year for credits is a joke. Currently I have two credits that are going to expire, but I can't buy anything of quality for two credits, so I have to buy more in order to use my two credits. Did I mention I hate these guys!!! I now use 123rf.com they are a lot cheaper and don't try to rip you off!$18.25
Dan RubinAhhhh, Mr. Rubin, my domain seller who sends me a daily email of his current domains. The $99 is actually what I paid to acquire piggers.com. I have bought several domains in the past from him and I highly recommend him to anyone and everyone.$99
Cristopher OcañaCris's email signature says, "Code is Poetry." He quickly fixed a wordpress theme I had, which was proof of his poetic coding skills Ü.$15
AmieeI've worked on several programming projects over the years with Amiee, and she is the only American I actually do any coding work with. She is accurate and quick with her work. This project was a simple psd to html job, which did rather well. $21.44
Grand TotalSad but true!$6,277.59

2010—The Year of Entertainment

It really is an awaking to see how much money and more importantly time we spent last year on entertainment. The total calculation on entertainment for 2010 is $1,541.57. Putting that amount into perspective, our current rent on our home per month is $1100. If you include in our monthly utilities I would say we are close to $1600 a month.  We spent basically one month’s rent and utilities on just entertainment!

Unfortunately (or fortunately), there is no way to calculate the time we invested into entertainment. To me this is the greater cost than money. On just RedBox alone we rented 30 movies. If the average movie is two hours than we wasted 60 hours of our life on simple sitting and viewing a movie!

I have always felt the American society is hyper focused on entertainment. However, our family is hyper focused and on steroids when it comes to entertainment. This exercise of chronicling our finances is hard, but well worth awareness it brings!

1800Flowers.com1$46.52Ryan & Lacy LikeWe had a friend in my masters program give birth and my classmates got together and put together a party for her. We all went in on some flowers and food. Lacy used 1800Flowers. It was amazing how fast the flowers came. You never know when you are shipping flowers, but I would definitely do it again. It was easy, cheap, and personal!
Anniversary Inn1$280.47Ryan & Lacy LikeAll I am going to say about Anniversary Inn is that their theme bedrooms definitely sets the mood for a memorable night!
Aramark PNC Park1$36.00Family LikesAramark PNC Park is where the Pittsburgh Pirates play. They are a lousy baseball team (the worst in the entire league), but going to a game is so worth it. The park is set right next to the three rivers that converge in Pittsburgh, and it truly is breathe taking! The Pirates lost that night (no surprise), but I would go again just for the experience.
Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh1$41.00Family LikesThe Carnegie Museum is an amazing museum and if you are in Pittsburgh a must see. However, be prepared to pay through the nose. As a student I got in free, but still for two adults (Lacy's mom was visiting) we had to pay $20.50, which is just insane prices!
Design it Yourself1$78.95Lacy LovesOne of the greatest things I love about Lacy is her thoughtfulness. In 2010 my sister's mother inlaw passed away. Neither Lacy or I knew her well, but that didn't matter. Lacy went to designityourselfgiftbaskets.com and created a custom basket for my sister and her husband. The site created a perfect gift for them, and they loved it. It was a creative way to say I love you!
Downtown Smicksburg1$27.55Family LovesRead Review
Gettsburg Foundation1$85.29Family LikesLike Smicksburgh (read review) we love to take our out of town visitors to the famous Gettsburg. It is a beautiful and holy place that everyone should go to. The $85+ we spent at the Gettsburg Foundation was a CD travel guide around the park (plus books). You just insert the cd into your car stereo and you have an instant guide. Both Lacy and my parents went with us this year, and they loved it. It really is worth going to this national treasure and enjoying it in your own car.
Just Ducky Tours2$178.70Family LIkesOkay, if you ever come to Pittsburgh I strongly recommend Just Ducky Tours. We did this twice last year when family visited and it was a blast! You're taken around Pittsburgh in an amphibian mobile. Basically, this is vehicle that can travel on both land and water. Lots of fun for both adult and children. Also, the stories you learn about Pittsburgh are amazing!
Keystone Fireworks1126.11Family LikesYes, I spent over a hundred dollars this last year on fireworks. Keystone Fireworks is like every fireworks stand -- expensive and addictive. I am a piro by nature and may have gone a little extreme this year. The fireworks were fun, but at the end I felt like I had just taken a pile of money and set it on fire!
MCM Theaters1$17.25Ryan & Lacy LoveRead Review
Miracle Lanes1$22.00Family LikesI don't think bowling is as popular in the East as it is in the West. We had a devil of time trying to find a bowling alley, and when we found Miracle Lanes it wasn't easy to get to (it's hidden behind a building). However, we had a lot of fun, and will hopefully go more often in 2011.
Nationality Room3$36.00Family LikesOne thing I love about Pittsburgh is how diverse it is. The University of Pittsburgh (aka The Pitt) has capitalized on the many cultures found in this great city. When you visit their campus they have an entire floor of their administration building dedicated to the different nationalities around the world. Basically, they decorated 35 different classrooms to show a different culture for each classroom. You rent a tape recorder and go into each classroom and hear the history behind the classroom. This is another activity that we like to take visitors to. It's not expensive and Pitt has done an amazing job!
Netflix7$58.79Family LikesRead Review
Oaks Theater4$67.00Ryan & Lacy LikeLacy and I feel like we found a hidden gem in Pittsburgh when it comes to the Oaks Theater. You can't tell from the outside, but the Oaks Theater is a magnificent early 20th century movie theatre. It is in fantastic condition and is a lot of fun to watch movies at. Also, if you go you have to try out their many flavors of popcorn. Lacy loves their jalapeno flavor!
Pandora.com1$36.00Ryan LikesI probably listen to Pandora about 10 to 12 hours a day. I work alone, and so I just put on my headphones and jam away (yes, I am listening to Pandora now). The best thing I did was to buy an annual membership. No longer do I have to listen to ads, which in a 12 hour period is really, really nice!
Pittsburg Irish1$24.00Family LikesOur oldest daughter is a fiery red head. She is almost 2 but full of personality. Last year we took her to the Irish festival in Pittsburgh and it was a lot of fun to have so many people stop us asking if our little girl was Irish. Seriously, though the Irish festival was a lot of fun. There is a booth for just about anything, and of course the yummiest (and fattiest) food you will ever eat! So much fun. It is something we will definitely do this year!
Pittsburgh Zoo1$23.54Family LikesThe Pittsburgh Zoo is only three miles from our house, but we only went once in 2010. However, it was a lot of fun. We went for Halloween and all of us dressed up. Lacy had our family do a theme. She was eight months pregnant and felt like a bloated cow. So her and I our oldest daughter were cows, while I was a farmer. We fit right in with the rest of the zoo!
RedBox35$128.40Family LikesWe have a love hate relationship with Redbox in our house. We love the convenience Redbox brings to our evenings, and who can argue with the price! However, this year we spent more in late fees and lost DVDs than we did in actually renting a movie. Here's the breakdown. We spent $75 in replacing lost DVDs and had $23 in late fees. If you subtract this amount from our overall cost you can see that we only actually rented 30 movies for 2010 (which is still crazy!).
SandCastle1$102.50Family LikesWe are big fans of amusements and water parks. SandCastle is a mixture of both (though, more on the water park side). Lacy and our daughter are practically fish and love the water. If there was an animal that was allergic to water that would be me. So, SandCastle isn't my cup of tea, but it is still worth going to at least once.
AMC Loews Waterfront2$36.00Ryan & Lacy LikeWhen you have children you don't seem to get to go to movies as often as you like (particularly new releases). However, Lacy and I for our dates nights will sometimes venture into Pittsburgh and go to the Waterfront. With tickets at $9 a pop it's not something we try to do too often. Waterfront, though, is one of the better theaters I've been do. Modern and big is an easy way to describe it.
Waterworks Cinema5$89.50Ryan DislikesWhat I find interesting is that Lacy and I went to the AMC theater twice in 2010 and spent $36 for our movies. However, in the two times we went we spent an average of $48.25 on snacks (piggers.com is an adequate domain for us). I don't know if I am more appalled at the prices or at us for willingly buying such outrageously priced snacks!

2010 — Clothing the Naked

We went to a variety of places to clothe the naked this year. Most were good experiences some were bad. We’ll get the bad out of the way first.

Few things get me angry like expensive stuff that doesn’t last long. Men’s Warehouse was one of the year’s biggest shopping let downs.  You would think for such an expensive price you would get a suit that would last for years. You would be wrong. In spite of the suit’s high end price tag, all of my suits kept ripping. We spent $804.97 on suits that I couldn’t wear.

Burlington Coat Factory was a much better deal. I got all the ties and white shirts I need for work and church at a reasonable $125.03.

Lacy’s choice of clothing stores was actually not one for herself, but one for our little girls—Baby’s R Us. Lacy actually did a post in November on shopping here, but she didn’t realize she was going to spend more in December. Last year Lacy gave birth to another precious girl. Of course, we needed to prepare for her coming (even though our oldest daughter is only 19 months older). So, as you can see in the below table we spent over $2,000 at Baby’s R Us.

Anyway, I have written more of our clothing experiences in the review table.

CompanyTimes VisitedTotal Amount SpentRecommendationReview
Babies R Us 15$2,220.12Lacy LovesWhen I consider how much we spent on Babies R Us this year I cannot say that I love this store like Lacy does. However, with 1.2 children it is nice to get the things you need. We plan to have a large family so I guess I am just going to have to swallow the expensive toy pill and see if we can maybe convince Babies R Us to do memberships like Costco so that we can buy in bulk ;).
Becoming Mommy1$45.00Lacy LikesLacy found this store while we were on date perusing the different shops on Forbes street in Pittsburgh.
Burlington Coat Factory2$125.03Ryan LikesI am a big fan of Burlington Coat Factory. I love their styles and also the unique knick-knacks you are going to find in their stores. One of the best finds in my trips this year to BCF was some cheap Donald Trump ties (like $10 a tie). Not a fan of the man, but love his tie selection!
Carnegie Mellon University Store1$128.80Ryan & Lacy NegativeI can't say that I dislike the CMU store, but I can say that I hate how expensive they are. Lacy's and my parents came out this year for my graduation and we decided to buy them CMU gear to wear as proud parents. It is just crazy how much CMU charges for clothing are other university apparel. It's particularly hard when you see that Pitt U's apparel is only a fraction of the cost. CMU already rakes me over the coals with tuition cost, they could at least give me a break when I am helping advertise their school by buying their brand!
Frank & John's Cleaners2$41.33Ryan & Lacy PositiveFrank & John's is actually located in the building I work at. It is super convenient. However, I feel their pricing is a little high. Yet, sometimes it is just easier to pay a little more for convenience than going out of your way to save a buck!
Gabrial Bros4$268.02Ryan & Lacy PositiveOkay, I am probably one of Gab Bro's biggest fans. We had never heard of this clothing/home store when we moved to Pennsylvania, since the farthest west the chain goes is Ohio. Now that we have found it I buy all my clothes there. They are like a TJ Max or Ross, but in my opinion better. Plus, they are one of the few clothing stores that actually has jeans for tall people!
GAP USA1$2.99Ryan & Lacy PositiveI normally don't buy anything from GAP, mainly because they are way overpriced. However, Lacy and I were shopping in the mall and she wanted to look in the GAP for something (I don't remember now), but I saw a nice t-shirt for $3. I am fairly sure this is my first purchase ever from GAP, but a cheap deal is a great deal even in an overpriced fashion store!
Halloween Adventure1$20.31Ryan PositiveThis last Halloween our church did a Trunk or Treat. It was our eldest daughter's first halloween where she was actually excited about the events and candy. Lacy had us dress in theme apparel. She and my daughter dressed up as cows (keep in mind that Lacy was 7 months pregnant by that time and she felt like a fat cow) and I was the farmer. I decided to go all out and went to Halloween Adventures in Monroeville. t I was able to get some fun stuff to go along with farmer garb (like a real looking rat that I pinned to my shoulder).

LDS Distribution Center4$551.62Ryan & Lacy PositiveIf you haven't detected from our buying habits we are LDS (Mormon). We devout and actively participate in the different aspects of the religion. Being Mormon there are certain needs we have that you can't buy at a regular store. For those needs we go to the LDS Distribution Center. The closest one to us in Washington D.C. right next to our temple. I echo Lacy's post talks concerning our feelings for the Distribution Center. Great place!
MiracleBaby.com1$34.95Lacy PositiveMy business partner had twins last year and being the thoughtful lady that she is Lacy purchased from MiracleBaby.com some outfits for the twins. Lacy really like this site due to its focus on unique and personalized clothing. I normally wouldn't recommend paying $35 for two newborn outfits, but when you can customize it, it is worth it!
Marshalls1$17.10Ryan & Lacy PositiveWe pass Marshalls all the time on our way into Pittsburgh, but we have never purchased anything before. I guess Lacy was feeling adventureous one day and purchased some toddler clothing for our oldest. It is a little expensive for toddler clothing, but we both like the outfit she bought!
Mens Warehouse2$804.97Ryan very unsatisfiedI have always purchased my suits from the Men's Warehouse. However, after my experience this last year I think I will go somewhere else. I purchased two suits from them since I was presenting for my master's program. With in one week the first suit ripped at the pocket. Over a period of three months both suits ripped a total of 5 times. It was extremely frustrating, and even though they mended them (and even replaced the pants once) I still felt like they thought I was intentionally ripping the suits. The last time I went I vowed I would never use them again!
Orrs Jewelers1$85.60Lacy LikesOne thing I didn't know when I purchased Lacy's wedding ring is that white gold needs to be cleaned at least once a year to keep its luster. We took Lacy's ring to Orrs Jewelers in Pittsburgh (on Forbes street) to have this done. When you go into the store you feel like you stepped into a high end "fancy pants" store. Of course, Lacy and I are in sweet pants and our grubby clothes. Not to mention that we had our little girl with us who wanted to touch all the "sparkels." Regardless of looking like hillbillies we were treated kindly and with respect, and they did a great job on Lacy's ring!
Payless Shoes1$56.97Lacy LikesLacy loves Payless because of their great selection on children shoes. She went there a few months ago to get both her and our oldest daughter (who is only a year and half old) some shoes. I was impressed that they spent under $60 for five pairs of shoes!
Ross3$346.57Ryan & Lacy PositiveWe spent on average at Ross's this year over $100, which is about right. Lacy really likes Ross's home and clothing selection, and I always end up buying one of their unique gadgets that seem to only be at Ross!

2010 — A Year of Tinkering (Auto Expenses)

I grew up around automobiles. My dad built a (illegal) massive garage in our backyard to work on the many cars he bought in the classifieds. He would fix these junkers up and make a few extra thousand on each car. My little bro went into the U.S. Marines to be a mechanic on Humvees. Much to my father’s chagrin, filling up my car with gasoline is the extent of my auto expertise.

2o1o was evident of my lack of auto skills. In one visit to the mechanic I spent over $5,000 (read the review on Spitzer Toyota for the full story). Personally, my 2000 Toyota Avalon is barely worth that much. I am certain I could have used that money to just go buy another used car, but I didn’t (and luckily we had savings to offset the hit financially).

Anyway, below are 2010’s auto expenses. They are not all mechanical expenses, we did some traveling, and we grew out of being a one car family. My new year’s automobile resolution for 2011 is to find a friend who can do my auto work =).

AAA2$209.46Ryan & Lacy PositiveThis year Lacy and decided to try out Triple A. We have insurance, but are cars always seem to need a tow. We purchased it for both our cars with three tows per car (they have other services but this was our main reason for going with it). Unfortanetly we used almost all the tows (5). The most epic tow was when we got our minivan stuck in the mud in the back hills of Pennsyvania. We called a tow truck which got stuck. That tow truck called another tow truck, which also got stuck. Finally, the biggest tow truck they had came out and got all three vehicles out. It was a very loooong night, but nonetheless we were glad we had gone with AAA.
Alamo Rent-A-Car1$300.50Ryan & Lacy PositiveI found that Alamo usually is the cheapest car rental company IF you get it from the airport. For our first trip to Utah last year we used them with no hassle, and I have never had any problem until the second trip we went on last year to Utah (see review on Dollar Rental).
Dollar Rent A Car1$924.33Ryan & Lacy PositiveSo, we have never used Dollar Rent a Car until we went on our second trip to Utah last year. I absent-mindedly forgot my wallet which had my drivers licence and credit card. Lacy had hers but she is only 21. Only Dollar would let her drive for a "reasonable" price. It wasn't really that reasonable since we had no reservations, but compared to everyone else it was a steal! This trip has taught us to always check Dollar instead of just going with Alamo.
Hertz 1$15.00Ryan & Lacy PositiveSo, if you read my woes with my Toyota Avalon you undertstand my gratitude for having a rental car. A few years back all I rented was from Hertz, but they became much more expensive and I moved away from using them. However, this time I didn't have a choice since the automotive shop repairing my car only uses Hertz. It was annoying that I had to $15, but that wasn't Hertz problem, but rather Spitzer's (which I have already shared my feeling on them). Altogether it was a good experience, but again I wouldn't use them due to price.
Monroeville Dodge1$5,000.00Ryan & Lacy PositiveThere is a really interesting story about Monroevill Dodge that I will have to blog about someday. However, our overall experience with them was quite positive. We purchased a 2006 Dodge Minivan, put down a large cash amount (from our savings) and pulled out a loan with Monroeville Dodge for $5,000. I hate going into debt, but now with another little one added to our family this year it has been a positive move!
Parking10$99.00Ryan & Lacy NegativeSo, the one thing I really hate about Pittsburgh is the paid parking. My very first visit ever to Pittsburgh cost me $35 in parking, which was for only parking my car twice in two days. It is a rip off. If you look at how much we've spent this year it makes you cringe. We averaged about $9 for parking and that really is ridiculous. If you are coming to visit here I would definitely plan into your budget parking fees!
Pepboys2$240.76Ryan & Lacy NegativeLacy already wrote a post on Pepboys, which was more echoing my complaints about them. I have taken our van into them on the alignment multiple times, and they say have fixed it. Even now it is not fixed. I don't know if it is a scam on their part or just bad mechanics! Either way, I wish there was a better option than these guys!
Spitzer Toyota2$5,190.41Ryan & Lacy Negative and PositiveAs mentioned in the Pepboys review Lacy already wrote about Spitzer Toyota, but I have to put my two cents here. These guys are good mechanics, but be prepared to hold onto your wallet. Speaking to one of the counter guys (Jared) he told me about all the services needed done. The total was in the thousands of dollars. I knew the car had been in a wreck before we bought it, but didn't realize the extent of the damage. I told Jared that we wanted specific things done, and I signed a paper thinking that was what was being done (bad on my part for not looking into all the charges). When I came back I found out the price I was expecting to pay was actually double. Luckily we had some savings (that was going to go to buy our minivan), but I am still irrated (mostly with myself) that this happened!
